Heres a buck i shot yesterday with my smoke pole.Hes the first decent buck I've seen this year. So far I've put a few does(there thick as the hair on a dogs back around here) in the freezer for meat, seen several smaller bucks i let walk but no wall hangers yet. As I'm sure you all know our rut has not started yet so the good days hopefully are still to come. This old boy was starting to get ready. His neck had started swelling and you could smell his tarsal glands.
I'm sitting here bored this morning so i figured i would share my hunt with you.
This was one of my more exciting hunts in awhile. Don't get me wrong there all exciting.Even if i don't take one. I love to just sit and watch them. It was cold yesterday morning so i was bundled up like a bug in a rug. For the most part the morning was pent watch squirrels feed on white oak acorns and chase each other around. Now I'm NOT a big deer call user but i could not help but notice all the fresh buck sign walking into my stand. So about 8:45 having not seen a single deer i decided to use my Primos can call. I figured it might catch the curiosity of a buck and get him to stick his head out. About 10 minutes after i hit the can i seen a small buck easing up the edge of a thicket.he didn't stick around long and was gone. About 9:16 i hit the can again. At 9:30 is when the woods come alive. I heard all kinds of racket, stomping, blowing and leaves rustling just out side of my sight inside the thick i seen the small buck in earlier. A few seconds later the small buck comes running very hard out of the thicket turning along side it and running out of sight. Curious as to what caused all this i keep my eyes trained on the spot i first seen the small buck come out at. So i hit the can again.Thats when i seen this buck easing along inside the thicket. He was in no hurry and had his head up in the air smelling.Luckily the wind was not in his favor and i made a clean shot on him. He fell in his tracks.
